Your questions answered

What does repatriation mean?

In the instance that a death occurs overseas, repatriation is the process of transporting a deceased person to another country. Some British nationals who die in the UK express a wish to be buried or cremated abroad; all of our funeral directors offer repatriation from the UK.

How do you repatriate to or from the UK?

If you’re a UK resident or non-UK resident abroad planning repatriation to the UK, you need to register the death with the local authorities in the country where the person passed away. Find your nearest British embassy, high commission or consulate.
If you are a UK resident in the UK and planning repatriation overseas, you can speak to someone 24/7, 365 days a year by contacting the London-based Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) on 0207 008 1500.

How does repatriation from the UK work?

If your loved one wishes to be buried or cremated overseas, we can help you organise this. Once you have provided us with a copy of the death certificate, we will handle the preparation of all other documentation required to repatriate the deceased by air transport.

What paperwork is needed for repatriation to the UK?

If you are returning the body of a loved one to the UK, you will need the following documentation to accompany them:

  • A certified English translation of the death certificate
  • Permission to remove the body, issued by a coroner (or equivalent) in the country of death
  • A coroner statement – if the death was unnatural or unexpected, a UK coroner will review these documents and decide if an inquest is necessary
  • Passport of the deceased

How long does it take to repatriate a body?

This will vary depending on where the person passed away, but usually, if the person died of natural causes it will take between five to seven days to repatriate the body.
If there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, a post-mortem may delay repatriation by up to three months; but on average it takes ten to fifteen days to transport a loved one to your chosen country.

How much does repatriation cost?

Repatriation costs vary depending on travel, type of coffin and whether the coffin needs to be airtight. This could range from £2,000 to £4,000.
