Our funeral branches were affected up and down the country when the ‘Beast from the East’ hit the UK.
The local Birtley community (Tyne and Wear) came to Walker & Morrell Funeral Director’s rescue when their hearse and limo became stuck in heavy snow on the way to a customer’s home.
Dozens of people came out of their homes to help push the vehicles up the steep road in the midst of the snow storm.
Funeral Directors Martin Morrell and David Hindmarch shovelled snow and grit, and pushed the vehicles with the others.
Martin said: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who came to our rescue.”
“We wouldn’t have made it to the funeral if it wasn’t for our incredible community; the family were truly grateful that we were able take them to the ceremony.
In Wiltshire the team from Chris White Funeral Directors, Wilton, also braved treacherous weather with a planned burial, which had 80 friends and family attending.
Unfortunately the catering company which was to provide food after the service let them down on the day.
Not wanting to ruin the ceremony, Funeral Director Becky Perry rang up their local bakers, Reeves, who opened to cater for the ceremony.
Becky and her colleagues took over the back room of the small bakery and made sandwiches, whilst staff from Reeves created other food platters.
It took Becky and her two boy’s three round trips up the hill to collect them, as the roads were impassable for cars!
Becky said: “We usually have five people involved in each burial ceremony and as only four of us made it in that day (myself, Barry Smith, Chris Payne and Chris White), we really had to pull together as a team.”
“The whole day was so magical, and I would like to send a huge thank you to Reeves and everyone who helped us to make the day perfect!”
